What to Plant in September

September is one of our favorite times of the year – the excitement of clearing and preparing plots, adding compost to soil, choosing seeds and transplants, and enjoying cooler mornings and evenings. September is the start of the fall planting season in Central Texas. We have a semi-arid climate and contend with drought and heat. We can’t stress just how important it is to consult your regional planting calendar to know when to plants certain fruits, vegetables, and plants in your area so that your garden thrives and you’ll get to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

We recommend consulting AgriLife Extension’s Central Texas planting calendar to give you an idea of when you can plant your fall selections here in the Austin area. It’s helpful to print it out and laminate it – even hang it somewhere, either on your fridge or outside in your garden. If you are gardening at a school or community garden, posting this on a communal bulletin board, kiosk, or shed will be extra helpful for new and seasoned gardeners.

Throughout September, you can plant quite a few types of fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Try something new!

  • Asian greens (seeds or transplants)
